Toei Animation made history this week with THE FIRST SLAM DUNK being the second film from Toei Company, the anime studio’s parent company, to pass the massive 15 billion yen milestone, doing so on the film’s 241st day in Japanese theaters and the in-universe birth date of Ryota Miyagi, the lead character of the film.
As of July 31, THE FIRST SLAM DUNK has made 15.01 billion yen (US$112.42 million) on the back of more than 10,41 million tickets sold. As previously mentioned, this is the second Toei Company (not just Toei Animation but the entire film studio) movie to pass the milestone after One Piece Film Red last year.
The film opened in North America last week and according to The Numbers, brought in US$645,086.
The original Slam Dunk TV anime aired from 1993 to 1996, with four anime films being spun off from the original anime. You can catch an on-demand replay of the TV anime right here on Crunchyroll.
THE FIRST SLAM DUNK opened in Japan on December 3, 2022, and has become the 8th highest-grossing anime film of all time in Japan. The film is headed to the UK, Ireland and Malta from Anime Limited and Toei Animation Europe this summer while GKIDS released the film in North America on July 28, describing the film as such:
Shohoku’s “speedster” and point guard, Ryota Miyagi, always plays with brains and lightning speed, running circles around his opponents while feigning composure. Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota had a brother who was three years older. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a famous local player from a young age, Ryota also became addicted to basketball.
In his second year of high school, Ryota plays with the Shohoku High School basketball team along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui as they take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship. And now, they are on the brink of challenging the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School.
